Santa Monica, US is preparing

For Santa Monica, AVs hold the promise of expanding access and preserving the pedestrian character of the vibrant downtown that has fueled the city’s ongoing success. Originally developed in the early 20th century as a seaside resort, Santa Monica has become a talent magnet in the digital media age—the city is home to companies like Activision, LionsGate, and Universal Music Group.

As the city assesses AV developments, it is particularly keen to understand the impacts on parking, as well as the threat of increases in vehicle traffic that could result. The city is actively networking with several other municipalities in California to share information. Notably, Santa Monica is also home to the RAND Corporation, one of the world’s most influential think tanks, which has a substantial research program on autonomous vehicles.
