San Ramon, US is piloting AVs

In June 2018, when they begin shuttling BART commuters at Bishop Ranch, a 500-acre business park in the Easy Bay community of San Ramon, two EasyMile driverless shuttles will become California’s first AV transit system. Taking on this first/last mile pilot are the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, the City of San Ramon, California DMV, and Concord, Calif. AV proving ground GoMentum Station.

Bishop Ranch is home to more than 30,000 employees, and AT&T’s West Coast headquarters and GE’s software division. The existing shuttle route runs on a circular route making more than a dozen stops. In the future, officials hope that a larger fleet of driverless shuttles could provide direct service on individual routes that “fan out like the spokes of a wheel”.
