Reno, US is piloting AVs
Before AV buses can learn to run, they need to learn how to walk. Or, in the case of Reno’s partnership with Proterra, a manufacturer of electric buses, and the University of Nevada, Reno - they must first learn how to see. Starting in 2017 and continuing through 2019, working with the Washoe County Regional Transportation Commission, researchers will study in-service transit vehicles operating on a three-mile route along the city’s Virginia Street casino corridor to test the effectiveness of both LIDAR and infrared sensors in detecting vehicles and pedestrians. Later stages of the project will involve the development of software to fuse these sensor data together within a new software design for self-driving technology and will explore prospects for commercialization.
