Memphis, US is preparing
FedEx’s hometown of Memphis will host a large-scale test of autonomous delivery vehicles designed by inventor Dean Kamen. Following in the line of the self-balancing Segway scooter and iBot, a stair-climbing wheelchair, Kamen’s SameDay Bots are custom-built for FedEx and have a top speed of 10 miles per hour. Beginning in the summer of 2019, an initial pilot will put the bots to work transporting packages between the company’s multiple locations in Memphis, including the company’s FedEx Logistics innovation skunkworks located in the historic Gibson Guitar Building. If successful, the company hopes to deploy the droids to retailers as part of its SameDay Service.
