Rionegro, CO is preparing

The Medellín suburb of Rionegro, home to the region’s international airport, has a storied history of progressive innovation. The town was a crossroads of Colombia’s independence movement in the 19th century, and the country’s 1863 constitution was written there. In partnership with the Medellín-based Fastrack Institute—an upstart think tank with close ties to Silicon Valley’s tech-touting Singularity University—the city explored the feasibility of driverless tourist shuttles as part of a proposed “Smart Path” cultural heritage trail. Building on the region’s internationally recognized achievements in inclusive social innovation, the city hopes to employ a civic planning model involving virtual reality simulations to inform public engagement processes.
