Edmonton, CA is piloting AVs
Alberta’s capital city is taking its first steps towards AV pilots by identifying a set of goals. An October 2016 study by the Department of Sustainable Development, Planning for Automated Vehicles in Edmonton, provides a wide-ranging set of recommendations to guide the city’s approach in coming years, including automation of transit vehicles and supporting alternatives to private vehicle ownership. The city is moving forward in partnership with Alberta Transportation, Fairmont Hotels, and the City of Calgary to establish an AV test track at the University of Alberta. The facility will be tasked with evaluation of a driverless minibus shuttle for future on-road pilots in the two cities. Public perception of this emerging technology is a key area of concern, and the city has identified the need for ongoing surveys to inform its AV efforts.
